The 2012 Santa Cruz Affiliate Cup is this Saturday, October 20 at our gym from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The workouts are posted and the teams are ready to rumble.

We also just got confirmation that Beast BBQ will be on site roasting an entire pig! They're going to be offering plates of whole hog bulgogi tacos / piri piri grilled chicken, coconut sweet potato mash and fuji apple slaw. In addition to being avid CrossFitters, Kyle and Aaron are local chef's with a history of creating top-notch victuals.

Recovery

IMG_7624Arlo learning his L-sit.

Rest days are a vital part of your fitness.  There are two basic ways to look at your rest days.  First, take a day off and do nothing.  Let your body recover and repair itself and allow your mind to unload from the stressors of training.  Secondly you can you a rest day to be active.  Go for a hike, swim or bike ride for fun.  Take it easy and enjoy your day out of the gym.

CrossFit Santa Cruz is like my extended family. Yet it bothers me that I've been training here for over two years and still don't know everyone as well as I'd like to. This is understandable. We all have busy lives with jobs and obligations to attend to. Our famous holiday parties are a great way to get to know your fellow CFSC athletes a bit more. But those are few and far between. In the mean time I will be conducting "Get To Know..." interviews like todays about Dave Leys.

________________________
How does it feel to be a legend?
Um, I don't know if I would proclaim myself a legend, but, uh, if you want to do that that's fine. I like that.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?
Since fall of '99.

After all these years, what keeps you more motivated than the rookies who come in here?
I don't know if I would proclaim myself 'more motivated.' Um, but what motivates me, I'll frame it that way, is ... it's boring if your not trying hard ... Life is not interesting unless things are challenging. (Training) is boring if it's not challenging.

You're like the James Brown of CrossFit: "the hardest working man in show business." What keeps you training so hard?
Um ... Well there's definitely ... more ways that I want to improve. That's what it is. I don't know, that's a really good question. I have to dig deep. Maybe it's because it's just me. I mean, that's what it is. It's just who I am. If I wasn't being who I am I wouldn't be happy. It's just who I am, it's kinda hard to explain. It's just what I do.

You do some extraordinary shit with the weights, but I think you found your CrossFit kryptonite a few months ago with the bar muscle-up. Have you conquered that yet?
Uh no. Bugs the hell out of me that I can't do it ... Messes with your head if there's something you can't do.

Did it mess with your head that you couldn't compete in Regionals this year?
Oh yeah. It was tough. I'm still trying to find that extra motivation that I was able to juice out of the Games. It's a little bit more of a challenge, actually, to be motivated if I don't have the ultimate venue to test my fitness like I did before.

I've heard your cheat days are pretty epic. What goes on during a Dave Leys cheat day?
It depends. Um, if I'm at a party, if I've been good, you know, if I've been eating healthy, feel like I deserve it, I'm gonna let it all go. To be honest, it used to be a lot more epic when I first started ... I would see how many doughnuts I could eat.

What time do you work out?
Usually in the morning.

Reebok or Inov8?
Haven't tried Inov8, so all I know is Reebok.

Vampires of Zombies?

Um, uh, vampires. Don't know why.

Blondes or Brunettes?
Brunettes.

Cats or Dogs?

Uh, do ... Uh, ooo. Hm. Dogs.

Daniel Tosh or Louis C.K.?
Daniel Tosh, 'cause that's the only guy I know.

Books or E-readers?
Books definitely.

Verve or Santa Cruz Roasting Co.?
Santa Cruz Roasting Company

Diane, Elizabeth or Fran?
Diane.

Gin, Rum or Tequila?
Rum.

What's your favorite T.V. show?
Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations."

Do you like to cook?
Um, yes and no. Usually no.

Besides CrossFit, do you have any other hobbies or interests?
I have a big interest in set design. Um, I don't know if this counts, but I went to design and build a playground for orphans in Zambia. And I'd really love to do that again.

When did you do that?
That was in 2009 ... And I got word from the orphanage that they need another playground.

Is this through an NGO?
I went to a church in L.A. that has a lot of creative talent within the church ... There's dancers, there's singers, there's poets, there's entertainers, there's designers. And I was going to school for set design ... I just love the challenge of communicating a message through the visual set.

What's one thing you like about Santa Cruz and one thing you don't like?
I love the chill attitude ... One thing I don't like, uh, it can kind of be an island, like island fevers. You're kind of stuck in Santa Cruz. It's so easy to be too lazy, not to go anywhere. You can easily lose track of time, that you've been in the same place, same spot on this planet, and there's other worlds to be explored.

What do you think about the coaching staff at CrossFit Santa Cruz?
My first impression of them, before I moved here, was they really seemed to truly care. They really seemed to care about your success. They really, um, it was very attractive to me to want to work out here because when I first met Hollis, 2009 Games, when I was competing, or 2008 Games, he was telling me about how much, he was just giving me advice. I just really picked it up, his vibe; that he would do whatever he can to help me. He just simply seemed like he really cared about your results. Not just in the gym, but outside the gym, too. That was important. Made you feel like you belonged.

There is nothing like practice to make a movement more solid and precise. Lindsey has practiced her handstand thousands of times. Here she is, balancing well. Quality time under load, in a handstand or holding the splits will pay off.

GHD Sit

CFSC_BrianDave
Brian and Dave.

The GHD sit-up is a great movement. It requires you to hold a rigid upper body, and then whip it up with the power of your legs. If you do not hold tight in the middle you will flop around like a noodle and feel like one in the morning. But if you learn to hold it all together, the GHD sit-up can transfer that power onto all your weightlifting, sprinting and gymnastics.
