About Us

CrossFitGymPhoto CrossFit Santa Cruz History
Hollis and Danielle, brother and sister owners of CrossFit Santa Cruz, were fortunate enough to be coached by Nicole Carroll and Greg and Lauren Glassman, and to be surrounded by group of incredible trainers. They are proud to continue the traditions they learned and have brought the founding principles to their location on the west side. They are committed to building a community of highly skilled professional trainers and life long clientèle.

Why Choose Us?
CrossFit Santa Cruz is a collective of dedicated trainers brought together by the belief in the foundations of CrossFit. The stimulus provided is always varied and the results are dramatic. The atmosphere is one of support and camaraderie to anyone willing to put in the work.

We believe that better movement and increased range of motion are the cornerstones of fitness and that quality coaching is a pivotal part of your experience in a CrossFit gym.

CrossFit Santa Cruz has a community of diverse athletes. We have engineers, teachers, college athletes, and doctors. We have moms, dads, fire fighters, police and EMT’s. We have clients who are old, young, and everywhere in between. The things they share are motivation, hard work and honesty. Those are the characteristics that we have built our business and our community upon.

What we do
CrossFit is an empirically driven, clinically tested and community developed strength and conditioning program. We are an assembly of dedicated trainers who want our clients to become stronger, leaner, faster, and more coordinated. We help mold our clients into better functioning beings. We mix gymnastics (body control), weightlifting (control of external objects), and cardiovascular training in as many ways as possible.

For a more in depth description read: What is CrossFit?

The workouts are always challenging and never boring. All training sessions are coached by a CrossFit Certified trainer. Each workout is scaled by load and intensity but not by kind. All fitness levels from college athletes to grandmothers can participate together. The coaching is supportive, enthusiastic and welcoming to anyone who is willing to focus and put in the work.

CrossFit is not your ordinary workout. But it is for ordinary people looking for dramatic results.

What You Get
Private Training  — There is no substitute for personal attention. In a private session is you and a coach developing your athletic ability. Special attention is paid to your individual goals and programming needs. Private sessions are a great way to practice a specific skill or hone in on some technique once a week in addition to group training.

Group Training — Here at CrossFit Santa Cruz you get individual coaching in a group setting. Every group session includes a warm up, some instruction, and a workout. There is a ton of variety and positive group energy. You get personal trainers in a group setting with camaraderie to push you along. Each group session is different from the one before and every group session is structured so that no matter your fitness level you can participate. We scale repetitions and weights but we do not change the program. Intensity is relative to each athlete. Group training schedule can be found here.

Rehab

DSC07504Naveen circa 1909

CrossFit is original in its design, unique in its approach and open source. It is based on the idea that the human form is designed to move. The squat, the dead and the press are all basic human movements that have been around forever, just like Naveen. Performed at low speed and light or no weight, these movements are part or our daily lives whether or not we are at the gym 'working out.'  It is for this reason that they should be an integral part of rehabilitation from injury.

Elite Maintenance

DSC07102Taking care of the body

"You wouldn't drive a Ferrari on the autobahn with bald tires and the emergency brake on." Kstar

We shouldn't run our bodies through a CrossFit WOD without proper movement prep and body maintenance. In the photo above our athletes are rolling around on tennis balls. Working on loosening up some gristle. Gristle is bound up muscle tissue that requires some focused attention. The idea being that anywhere you can find a spot that "sings" when you roll over it, you need to focus in and work it out. If this doesn't make sense to you, ask your coach.

Data Collection

After a weekend of education and inspiration, it is time to get back to work. Coach B and Coach Kstar advised us to journal our efforts. Tracking our efforts allows us to make sure and steady progress. Keeps us honest and provides valuable insight into our training. Allowing us to look back at what we have accomplished and were we have met our limitations, will provide data to support our future goals.

For those of you who missed Coach B check out this video from CrossFit.com

Workout:
7 rounds for time of:
2 handed Kettlebell Clean and Jerk
1 Rope Ascent

Don't Compromise

We have a new phrase to use to qualify better movement from worse. We want the "Best Fit" position. When referring to the overhead squat that means open shoulders, armpits out, elbows to the ground. Too often we see athletes compromise the "Best Fit" position. Rolling the shoulders forward, armpits facing the ground, elbow facing forward. Examine the photos above. Are these athletes in the "Best Fit" position?

Workout:
5 rounds for time of
95 pound Overhead Squat, 21 reps
21 Knees to Elbows

Kelly Starrett is an intelligent, insightful, passionate, and incredibly funny individual. He has profound insight into the human body and is able to share that knowledge with anyone. His complete understanding of human anatomy as it pertains to the CrossFit movements makes him an invaluable resource for trainers and athletes. "A Day With Kelly Starrett" at CFSC this weekend included hands on lessons on the techniques and practices for maintenance of the human body. As Kelly pointed out, "Elite levels of performance require elite levels of care and maintenance."

Receive the Bar

'A Day With Coach Burgener' was an outstanding success. Coach Burgener's expertise and unmatched enthusiasm for the Olympic lifts inspired many of the participating athletes to get PR's in several movements including the muscle snatch, snatch balance, overhead squat and snatch. It was great to have athletes from so many affiliates. CrossFit Unlimited, CrossFit San Diego, CrossFit North Santa Cruz, CrossFit 831, CrossFit East Sacramento, and CrossFit Parker Fire in Colorado!

Evidence Based, Imperially Driven, Community Developed.

The Set up

DSC06795Coach B and Coach D look over Zac's set up position

The set up is critical for all athletes to know and understand. There are few positions in CrossFit more fundamental. There is certainly no position more important. The understanding of midline stability, posterior chain activation, multijointed motor recruitment patterns are all to be learned in the set up.
