Split Decision

Carie
Carie splits her jerk

Yesterday we talked about feet and hand positioning. The split jerk demands fast feet and fast hands. Olympic style weightlifters train the split to increase there maximum load. That usually alway involves training the same foot forward. Should we as CrossFit athletes do the same? Maybe, or maybe we should train either foot forward. While working our jerks a few days ago, Pat and myself noticed that we both seemed faster and more stable with our weak foot forward. Why do you think this is?

Looking good, Carie :)

I agree about the weak foot forward. That feels natural for me. I think it is the stability that the back leg provides that makes us place the stronger leg in that position. Unfortunately, I have heard that surfing requires the front foot for steering, and that places the weaker foot in that position for most people. If you switch legs for surfing, your body won't be facing the wave. I just tried surfing for the first time, so I have no idea how to steer yet let alone stand up reliably, but I imagine it will be a challenge...
