Rest Day

Heather "resting" after a workout the other day!
Happy Memorial Day Everyone! As a reminder, we are closed today in support of The Trevor Win'E Memorial Day Challenge. If you are not doing Trevor with us today at CrossFit North Santa Cruz, you should take a rest day and chill out! If you are dying to move around or just want to do something other than think about not eating, do something fun and light like going for a swim in the ocean (if it's warm enough!), a bike ride along the cliffs or go up the UCSC and use the track. There is a pull-up bar station up there and you can do squats also between laps!
I think you all are getting the picture on how to measure blocks for the Zone diet, so this week, I'll still post my meals but just in block measurements. I will add "p" for protein, "c" for carb, and "f" for fat. Being only the start of week two, I'm still aiming to eat mostly foods on the favorable food list. I am also keeping my fats at 1 x the normal amount for now.
Today’s Meal Plan:
Breakfast: 2 blocks
2 blocks of poached eggs (p)
1 block of strawberries (c)
1 block of orange (c)
3 blocks of avocado (f)
Snack: 1 block
1 block of string cheese (p)
1 block of apple (c)
1 block of almonds (f)
Lunch: 3 blocks
Sandwich made of 2 1/2 blocks of Ezekiel bread (c), 1 block of cheese (p), 2 blocks of deli turkey, 3 blocks of avocado, 1/2 block total of cucumber and lettuce (c) and spicy mustard
Snack: 2 blocks
2 blocks of Fage 2% yogurt (p & f) with 1 block of blueberries (c), 1 block of blackberries (c), and a drop of vanilla extract and a sprinkle of cinnamon
Dinner: 3 blocks
1 block total of salad greens, tomatoes and cucumbers (c) with 1 block of hard boiled egg cut in (p), 1 block of grated cheese (p), 1 block of deli turkey (p), 1 block of chick peas (c), 1 block of grapes (c) and 3 blocks of olives (f) with balsamic vinegar on top
Snack: 1 block
1 block of grapefruit (c)
1 block of string cheese (p)
1 block of cashews (f)
Enjoy your day off and see you tomorrow!

Gloria - you're progress is amazing! Don't worry about missing the workouts and definitely don't think of yourself as out of the challenge. You're still in this :) Is your birthday this coming Sunday or was it yesterday?
Debs - Very cool to hear that this is clicking for you. It actually becomes fun when you get to share this experience with others AND you FEEL good!
Mallee - I look forward to the day when I don't crave sugar. I'm glad to hear that it is possible :)
As for me, I'm doing A LOT better. Yesterday was the first day that I ate 11 blocks and felt like it was just enough. I definitely felt hungry but it was right around the time when I was supposed to eat anyway! I've also noticed that my stomach is shrinking... a three block meal now feels like an absolute binge - maybe even a little too full afterwards (not that I'm complaining).
Because I was at the Burgener Seminar, I allowed myself 12 blocks on Friday, 13 blocks on Saturday and back to 11 on Sunday and it worked very well for me. I don't think I would have been able to get through two days of Burgener drills and lifting if I hadn't eaten a little more. Passing out with a PVC pipe over my head would have been a little embarassing ;)

Heather, my BDay is Sunday June 1st. I also ate about 3 extra blocks yesterday. I wasn't hungry; I just wanted to eat! Instead of running out for Super Chix Nachos from T.Vallarta, I just ate an extra 3 block meal and believe it or not, that took care of the desire. I have to say that most of the time (until the zone) eating in my case is rarely because I'm hungry. Something wrong there, huh? I think that being super strick for a while will take care of that, though. I plan to take this beyond the six week challenge just because I think that I need the discipline and the habit formation of eating properly. It took years and years to develop bad eating habits(incl. eating disorders in my past). It will probably take longer than six weeks to conquer that. I plan on at least the whole summer, if not six months. Even after that, I don't want cheat days more often than once a week.
Mallee: Again, thank you so much for posting your meal plans. I kind of feel like you are doing all of the work for me but I'm taking advantage of it, nontheless.
Danielle: One of the biggest, biggest helps has been to be able to figure out how to calculate blocks from nutrition labels. That was missing for me an you made it sound so simple in just one or two sentences. I can be a bit tardy at times but I'm glad that you explained it in a way that I got immediately.
I plan to get back to CrossFit tomorrow. Today will be easy in terms of the zone because I'm not going to any parties or cookouts; I have to work as usual. I'm actually pretty happy about it, if you can believe that!

Heather, It's so good to hear that you are feeling better on 11 blocks! The first week is the hardest, hah? I'm also starting to feel full "enough" on a three block meal, and that's a good thing!
Gloria, I don't mind putting the meal ideas together. It forces me to stay creative with my own meals and honest with the blocks! I think something that has helped me stop eating and snacking even when I'm not hungry is thinking about eating food as a treat. I look forward to it and want to make it last as long as possible! I stop everything else and just eat so that I enjoy it and don't waste the satisfaction I get from actually getting to eat on doing something else at the same time. Also, seperating eating as it's own "activity" helps stop endless snacking while on the computer or while doing other things like watching TV...

So true Mallee! Have you been spying on me? Eating while doing something at the same time is a big no-no for me from now on!

Heather - This weekend was an awesome experience and it was great sharing it with you as well! I must say, your technique and form were impressive...keep it up. I know this goes without saying, but you are welcome at CFSD anytime...come visit us soon. By the way, nice pic...

Gloria,
You inspire me to think of this not so much as a two or six week thing but as a life thing. I'm with you on the bad (really bad) eating habits in the past. Know that you always have support in keeping the nachos away when you need it (I know I'm gonna).
