Day One

The 10am class on Sunday doing the main site WOD.
For those of you doing the Zone Challenge, today is your first day! How are you feeling? I'm hungry. Does anyone feel like the amount they are suppose to eat is too much? I'm already thinking about what I am going to eat tomorrow. It's going to be a pretty busy day, so I'm guessing that most meals will be quick and easy to measure out. Here's my Zone plan for Tuesday:
Breakfast: 2 blocks
14 grams of Fage 2% yogurt with 1 apple cut into it
Snack: 1 block
1/4 cup low-fat cottage cheese lightly sprinkled with 1 cup of sliced starberries
coffee with 1/2 tbsp of 1/2 & 1/2
Lunch: 3 blocks
3 oz sliced deli turkey
2 cups of celery
1 apple with 1 1/2 tsp almond butter on it (it's not much almond butter, but at least it provides me with one perfect bite of apple and almond butter! I always save the best bite for last!)
Snack: 2 blocks
1 zone bar
Dinner: 3 blocks
4 1/2 oz of lean ground beef cooked with onions, garlic, crushed red pepper and Italian seasoning
2 cups steamed green beans seasoned with salt and pepper
1/2 of an orange for dessert
(I estimate that the olive oil used to cook the onions is enough fat and because there is 1/2 a cooked onion in one block, that I probably am only eating about 1/8 of a block of carbs from the onion. I will eat a little less green beans to keep everything balanced.)
snack: 1 block
1 oz cheese stick with 1/2 orange and 3 almonds
Because it will be such a long day and I want to eat within an hour of waking up as well as before I go to bed, I am spreading my meals out more than usual.
-M
Workout:
Five rounds for time of:
30 Glute-ham sit-ups
25 Back extensions

that face i'm making is precious i tell you. =) awesome. and amy always look so calm and cool. *smile* i'm all nervous to start the zone tomorrow, but i'm sure i'll be fine once i get into the groove. we can do this, guys!

I did the zone sat and sun and it's going pretty well. Today will be a big test; CrossFit @ noon and then a grueling 8-9 hours @ the hospital and probably fall to sleep around 2a.m. Thanks for posting your meal plans everyday. That's a huge help. I'll be modifying it today, thought. I AM NOT eating 2c. celery! Blech! And just for me, what is Fage yogurt? Is that a brand name?
Posted by: Gloria Jean | May 19, 2008 at 08:50 AM
Fage is a brand of Greek yogurt that is really low in carbs and high in protein. It has about the same percentages as cottage cheese which is considered just protein, where as most yogurt is considered both carb and protein! It's great because you can eat more of a different carb like a fruit! If you get the 0% you can add a fat like nuts, or get 2% and don't add any fats. I get it at Trader Joe's, sometimes at Deluxe or Shopper's Corner.

Thanks Mallee! I love yogurt! Next best thing to ice cream! I'll pick some up next shopping trip.

Okay guys, I've decided to do the Zone. One question though, how do I find out how many blocks I need? I can't find that in the reading I've seen. Maybe I've overlooked it.
Have a great week.

Willy, your block perscription is based upon your lean body mass (weight -body fat%)and activity level. If you can tell me those two things and how tall you are I can calculate it for you. Also it is in the Zone Book apendex. If you are going to do it you should get the book.

Danielle,
I was going to purchase the book today, but failed to find that section after skimming through it in the book store. I wanted to be sure before I begin it. Thanks for the offer though, here are my specs:
5'9" 185 lbs. 14%
Hope that's sufficient. I'll go get the book tomorrow and begin.

Doggonnit! Already missed the first workout. Maybe central will do fight gone bad soon...

willy
your lean body mass should be about 159lbs (bones, skin and muscle) asccording to my calculations if you are a crossfitter mostly for your fitness (meaning you are not running, swimming or something on the side) you should eat 14-16 blocks/day. Stay on the low end for the first 2 weeks.
